Edward Jenner was quite important. He analysed how milkmaids did not catch smallpox while ill with cowpox. Smallpox was the major killer of that time, with no known cure. Jenner had no evidence that his experiment on James Phipps worked and many people opposed his ideas due to religion. Despite that, he did manage to cure smallpox with his discovery and created continuity of vaccinations. However, his vaccination only worked on one disease and the Government were unsure of whether they should make parents vaccinate their children with Jenner’s vaccination.

Edward Jenner was important to the history of medicine, because he linked together that women who worked with cows (milkmaids) rarely ever got smallpox, yet they suffered from a mild disease called cowpox. So Jenner decided that he would inject cow pox into a woman and an 8 year old boy named James Phipps. Then he injected smallpox in them and they discovered that the smallpox didn’t affect them as much now and they stayed alive after. This injection was eventually called vaccine; reason behind this was ‘vacca’ is the Latin word for cow. The government didn’t want to publish his ideas at first and other doctors attempted the theory but didn’t know exactly how to conduct it. He made the first ever vaccination and if it wasn’t for him we wouldn’t be able to make our body’s immune to many diseases today such as the cervical cancer jab. So even though he only focused on one disease in the long term he helped a lot as he started the vaccination ‘trend’.

I think Edward Jenner was very important. He invented the first vaccination which prevented small pox. He gave cowpox to a human being through an open cut; he used pus from a milk maid and then rubbed the pus into the cut. Then making them immune. This had a long term affect, people discovered and made more vaccinations for different disease but didn’t have a short term effect due to people disagreeing with his theory.

in the 1870s kock and his research team developt the scientific methods that helped scientists identify certain bacteria. the kock made the first discovary that becteria caused a human disease. this disease was tuberculosis. then other scientists followed his discoverys and realised bacteria caused many other human diseases.
